At least 13 individuals killed and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
