EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
