Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
