Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these treatments should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
