Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
