The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
