Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
